Someone asked me this, and I figured I should answer.
Well, first off...
I couldn't get Ableton Live to run on my shitty laptop, so my DAW of choice for the past year has been FL Studio.
You can download the trial version of FL Studio here. The trial version does last forever, although you can't reopen your project files after saving and closing, which is really inconvenient!
I must say that I do not condone piracy.
While sometimes I do use external/downloaded VSTs like FM8, Absynth and TyrellN6, I mostly tend to stick to FL's default plugins because they get the job done just fine. For example:
This song, which is a year old at the time of writing this, was made almost entirely with FLEX presets.
Now more recently, I've used Kepler for a lot of my more synthwave-y stuff. It's got a lot of cool sounds that are great if you wanna make stuff like that.
Oh man. Uhhhh
Here's a short list of the sample packs I use for the drums in my music:
- A lot of Sample Magic packs, mostly the Chillwave, New Wave and Synthwave packs
- Oliver's "Power Tools" sample pack (Volumes 1-3)
- sylvir's sample packs (packs 1-6)
- Mostly just a lot of stuff from splice in general (i.e. UMRU's sound cache)
- This one pack with just samples from vintage drum machines
This isn't all of them, but they are the ones I tend to use the most in my songs.
These packs are not free. Once again, I, Colorcast, do not condone piracy.
(Not publicly, anyway)...
Hope this was helpful and/or informative to somebody!
